Case Study
ENEL
Utility: Enel (ENEL Grid)
Location: Milan, Italy
Infrastructure Type: Wood distribution poles
ENEL manages one of the largest electricity distribution networks in Europe, serving millions of customers across urban and rural regions throughout Italy.

The Challenge
Utilities operating in dense urban environments often face additional logistical challenges when maintaining infrastructure. In residential neighborhoods, poles are frequently located in tight or restricted areas, including:
- Behind residential fences
- In narrow access corridors
- Near private property or landscaping
- In locations where heavy equipment access is limited
Traditional pole replacement in these settings can be difficult, disruptive, and costly. Utilities require solutions that can be installed efficiently while minimizing disturbance to surrounding infrastructure and property.
The Solution
GridWrap installed BULLWRAP® composite reinforcement on wood utility poles within residential areas in Milan.
The installation demonstrated the adaptability of BULLWRAP® in less accessible locations, including poles positioned behind fences and within confined urban spaces.
Using standard field procedures, crews were able to apply the composite reinforcement directly to existing poles without requiring extensive site preparation or heavy equipment.

The Result
The installation demonstrated that composite reinforcement can be successfully applied even in restricted urban environments.
By reinforcing poles in place, utilities can:
- Avoid disruptive pole replacement projects
- Maintain infrastructure in hard-to-access locations
- Extend the service life of existing assets
- Improve structural resilience with minimal impact to surrounding properties
This project highlighted the flexibility of BULLWRAP® as a practical reinforcement solution for urban distribution networks.
